I hate summer more than any other season, because of the heat. One of the main reasons I had considered moving to San Francisco in the first place was because of the cool weather. I’d rather have the chance to bundle up than to try to peel absolutely every article of clothing off in attempts to feel cool. Although, I’ve made an exception to this season because of America’s favorite pastime. Baseball.

Baseball and I have a history like most fans of it. I’m sure most of you can remember your first game or how you came about to be a fanatic. As most of you know, I grew up in Los Angeles County. Home of the Dodgers, but I … I was raised an Angels fan. (Number 15, Tim Salmon, was my favorite.) You can only imagine the crap I got from friends saying I wasn’t a true inhabitant of Los Angeles, because I was a fan of the team located in Orange County. Don’t get me wrong though, if the Dodgers are on I’m a fan, but if the Angels are against the Dodgers it’s a whole other story. I started out listening to my dad whistle and yell at the screen after the Angels (known as the California Angels at the time) were either winning or were a disappointment. We would spend hours watching and I was able to tell you every single player by first and last name. My dad would call out for the score of a game while he was outside doing yard work and I would repeat the score, how many were on base, who was on deck, etc. I could be given the name of a city and be able to tell you what team it was. Lately, most of what I hear are cheers for the boys in red to hit another home run, because they’re pretty good compared to what I remember growing up. Some call baseball boring and not their sport, but out of every sport watched in my house from football to golf, baseball will always be my favorite. You couldn’t get any better than a game at Angel Stadium at 7PM in the summer heat sitting there alongside the three boys of my family (Dad, Corey, and Aaron), eating peanuts, yelling “CHARGE”, and getting up for the 7th inning stretch.

When I look back now, baseball is what brought my family together and reminds me of the good times throughout my childhood. These days I will still catch a baseball game on television if I’m unable to attend a game and of course no matter where I am at or how many name changes they have, I will always be an Angels fan. So even if I have to sit in weather that makes me feel uncomfortable, miserable, and sticky, I will tolerate summer for a baseball game.

I feel like I’ve been saying a lot of goodbyes recently. First my job and now my parents are moving from the house I lived in for most of my life. This is basically where all my childhood memories up until now were made. I have to move my bedroom in their house all the way to their new house. So I’ve spent the last two weeks of my spare time going through a bunch of items to see if I want to throw any of it away and box up the rest to be moved. I can’t begin to tell you how weird it is to pull out my prom dress, graduation cap and gown, photos, yearbooks, old letters, and things your mother has saved over the years to remember your childhood. It is almost alien-like going through your memories and thinking about all of the things that made you who you are today. Cheesiness and remembrance to follow now:

Not only the house is being left behind though, but the whole city in general. The neighborhood coffee shop (Flo’s) that everyone would go to on Saturday or Sunday mornings. Everyone knew each other and you’d talk about how each was doing. Tito’s sandwich shop that had a line of cars just waiting for that awesome meal. The El Monte Barber Shop where I remember both of my brothers crying for their first time getting their haircut from Rudy. The bakery on Peck Rd. that served champurrado, pan dulce, and tamales at 6 AM. Lambert Park, where I worked the snack bar helping my parents coach and be team mom while my brothers grew up playing baseball. The same place where I experienced my first kiss from my first love. The quick distance between my city and downtown Los Angeles where trouble could be made. The long rides from my house to Bob’s Big Boy to get diner food at 3 AM. Knowing where friends from high school still live or their parents and being able to name who lived at almost every house on each block in the city.

It is funny to look back at all of these things knowing that you can easily come back to visit even if they are far, but sad to know you can’t get to it on a daily basis anymore. I’m happy my parents are making this transition though for themselves, but I’ll always miss the city I grew up in. Now to get to these boxes and stop procrastinating…

I really can’t believe we’re already in the fall and a few weeks have already went into October! The fall months normally mean a lot of busy times for me, because three members of my immediate family, and I celebrate our birthdays in October and November. Lately I have been busy with a lot of personal things which vary from looking for a new job, leaving my current job, get packing done for officially moving everything out of my parent’s place, helping plan my mom’s birthday party, school, etc. I probably shouldn’t be keeping this busy, but with the amount of things I have to do, it is impossible to do anything different.

My current job has already been informed of my departure and is very supportive of the new opportunities in my life that I have decided to embrace. That being looking for a new job , school coming first, and going on interviews when necessary. Making my complete move into the Bay Area which has obviously taken some time has been held back mostly by my current job which is based in Los Angeles and Sacramento. I have decided that looking for a new job where I can branch out and focus all my time in the Bay Area will help me out when it comes to school and the future. I guess you can say I have already made up my mind about making San Francisco my permanent residence, but I’ll always miss Los Angeles in ways that can’t ever be explained to a SF inhabitant.

Planning ahead for the end of October and all of November comes with its problems. Specifically because my Mom and I both have our birthday in October (24th and 29th) and Halloween is also almost in the same week. Then AK and my Dad have their birthday in November (12th and 23rd). Among birthday cakes, parties, and family get together time, I have to squeeze in time to myself to keep focus on school and personal things. Not to mention that I will need to make sure that I am ready to leave for Thanksgiving when it comes around. Plane tickets are already being considered, so hopefully I will be able to set a date and make a purchase this week. I have already designated days that are considered “homework” days which give me a lot of room and time so that I know what needs to be done and when it needs to be done by. Finals are right around the corner as well, so I will be taking time to study which I doubt I will need, because the information has been seeping into my brain better than I had hoped for. I have to love that photographic memory of mine.

I hope October doesn’t leave me in the dust after the all the plans are done, but there is always catching up in November!

Especially in Los Angeles, because the county is so huge that there isn’t anything you ever have to try twice unless it is too awesome to pass up the second time around. Although now my life has turned around to get to know San Francisco as well.

I get a lot of crap for being from the Los Angeles area when I am in the Bay Area. There is apparently this “rival” between San Francisco and Los Angeles that I had never heard of until talking to some of the Bay Area inhabitants. I for one think they have just not experienced Los Angeles like I have, while I also expect myself not to understand how they feel about their city. Growing up in Los Angeles could never really be explained in words unless you happen to have lived there your whole life. The city can only speak for itself upon your own experiences. I am still to this day experiencing new things in the Los Angeles area, because there are so many things to do there. Whether it be a drive up Sunset or time spent traveling down Pacific Coast Highway to one of the many beaches I love to surf and visit. Sure LA has its bad moments which consist of the shitty smog, occasional fires, or bad traffic, but every city has its faults. It still doesn’t change how much I love the familiarity of where I grew up. The amount of culture and diversity is as vast as San Francisco’s, but I can name some of my favorite places that have so many of my own personal memories. My memories consist of nights I drove through WeHo, Sunset, or Melrose for the first time. Or when I was driving back home, looked up at the Foothills, and noticed that the snow on top of the mountains glistened clearly while you were driving up North 605 toward 210. UCLA has been a campus I haven’t even begun to experience after having attended only a year, but the Westwood area is beautiful. I could go on forever, but that would be a book in itself.

Of course I love Los Angeles, but San Francisco made me fall in love after my first trip. Driving 5, 152, and 101 for the first time up to the Bay Area was of course different than any other place I had been in Southern California. It was quite possibly the most boring drive of my life. The car pool lanes were completely different and dashed with white instead of the double solid yellow I was used to. The people were different to me and the look was almost too peaceful compared to the hustle of LA. As I drove into the city though, I knew it was where I wanted to be. The weather was crisp and cool, just the way I liked it. The architecture was completely different than LA and the access to every area by means of public transportation was completely logical and seemed easy. It was a Saturday and of course Embarcadero would be busy as fuck, but a drive to Dolores Park and then on over to the Golden Gate Bridge made it all worth it. I loved that people were jogging, biking, and seemed to generally be enjoying themselves. My flight from LAX to SFO for the first time was also beautiful. Flying up the coast with a window seat is something I could do over and over again, because seeing where ocean and land come together is breathtaking.

Here is where the problem comes in… I love both areas and I will always miss LA, but I have obviously already chose the Bay Area to go to school and will live here until further notice. Dealing with friends from both areas is sometimes a little difficult, because both like to bash the opposites of my amazing homes. The appreciation that it takes to come from both sides is obviously hard, because most of my Bay Area friends have never lived 20+ years in LA. As most of my LA friends have never lived in SF. I can safely say that I love each equally and always miss both when I go visit the other. I can also say I hate things in LA as much as I hate certain things in SF, but I have never felt at home as much as I have in both areas. The problem being that I am always at a stand still when it comes to where I want to be at that moment in time. That will probably never change, but hopefully I’ll be able to cope with being so homesick for each while I’m away.

I can’t speak for everyone, but I do know that I love living in California because of my access to the vast amount of great beaches. I could never move from this state, because the separation between the city and ocean is really not that far and the weather is amazing. The Bay Area is almost completely surrounded by water and if I go back down to Southern California, Orange County has some of the best beaches I’ve ever surfed at. I can remember getting up early on Saturday mornings to wander on down to Huntington Beach and stay until sunset. The Laguna Beach area is actually my favorite, because it has coves for you to explore and a private beach that I love to walk on. The smell of the ocean mist alone is enough for me to be happy with where I am at. No matter how many times I have went to the beach, I never grow tired of it. It has always been the one thing that I can come back to when I need to relax and enjoy my time. That is why lately the beach has been my location these past couple of weeks. It isn’t because the weather is absolutely gorgeous and it is the summer, but walking and listening to the ocean is where I can be at peace. I can sit for hours with my own thoughts or hang out with a friend and enjoy taking in the scenery.

I have found myself thinking a lot about Stanford lately and where my life is taking me. The amount of time it is going to take to complete medical school is overwhelming. The thoughts about financial aid, student loans, study time, and working has added to the amount of stress that is called life. Preparation to transfer into a new school is difficult and it never comes easy for anyone. I have wondered if Stanford was the right choice for me or if I do belong in Los Angeles at UCLA, but I think it might just be me worrying about the sudden change. The move from the Los Angeles area to Burlingame to attend Stanford is obviously one of the biggest decisions I’ve ever had to make in my life. Who was I going to know here? I was leaving all of my friends and family behind and starting fresh. So trips back and forth between Los Angeles and the Bay Area always make me miss home. Then I remember how hard I have worked to get to where I am today. The hours of making sure my papers were right. Is this a clear thesis? Does the MLA formatting look correct? Is your argument backed up by enough evidence?

This makes me find myself at the beach with my thought process. Being able to clear my head and push all of the stress off of my shoulders helps. I already know that you should not expect life to come with ease, but I wasn’t expecting to feel the amount of added pressure so suddenly. Your life does not pause for you and it is always a constant uphill battle to get to the specific goals you want to achieve. Even though I seem to be coming back to this same subject frequently, I know a small break and releasing pressure is what is necessary to keep myself from going insane with stress. The amount of time and effort I have put into Stanford and my studies in general make me happy to know that this will all be worth it in the end. It may seem like a set back, but it is another one of those stepping stones I need to reach my end result. To those of you in my personal life, if I’ve been very busy lately or hard to get a hold of, you might want to check out one of your local beaches. I might be sitting there on the sand trying to relax. Feel free to join me.

I couldn’t believe that after all of the time I had lived in LA, I had never been there. If you may have read in previous posts, I am a big fan of museums and art in general so the Getty seemed like the perfect place to go on a hot summer afternoon. It happened to be one of the first weeks of the summer too, so of course everyone was in summer dresses, shorts, and flip flops.

When my R and I arrived, we had to take a tram that takes you across the hills of LA that overlook the freeway. (The tram reminded me of the BART system in San Francisco which I don’t really use unless I am coming to or from the airport.) Right when you walk into the Getty Center you are immediately surrounded by art in the forms of sculptures and the scenery is absolutely amazing. There are multiple buildings that you can walk through to check out Western from the Middle Ages, all the way up to the present. There is beautiful handcrafted furniture, fountains, chandeliers, paintings, and sculptures as you walk through each area. The gardens are also decorated beautifully and a lot of students in the area happen to be laying across the lawn or sitting in the cafe tables enjoying their studying in the tranquil environment. I captured photos of the LA views with one of my cameras there, but I am probably going to have to go back some time for the lights at night. I enjoyed the peaceful time that I had at the Getty Center and I hope to visit the Getty Villa that is located in Malibu soon. Both are apparently very different when it comes to what art is in them. (The Getty Villa is full of Greek art.) Admission is free here, so it is not costly at all if you want to enjoy a peaceful Saturday afternoon like I did. It is also open until 9 PM. Parking has also recently decreased to free after 5 PM. I suggest taking a visit and hopefully soon I will be visiting the Getty Villa and blogging about that museum too.

I posted the rest of the photos from my visit to the Getty on my Flickr in case you want to check out some of the pictures I took. The only thing I wish I had was my other camera that has a better zoom for things like wide landscape views. I guess you can never really plan ahead for something as spontaneous as my trip to the Getty. I always happen to decide where my friends and I are going when we jump in the car and start driving. Hey, what can I say, that is part of my enjoyment of random adventures.

Usually late at night when I am craving something, but don’t know exactly what, I call up my friend Gio because he is an insomniac like me and he is as spontaneous as me. We were driving down Melrose from 101 and ended up at a fairly famous Los Angeles location. Canter’s Deli, located on North Fairfax. I had Canter’s before when I was in Las Vegas, but decided I had to find the original because the second usually doesn’t do the original justice. When the waiter came out he brought a menu crammed with a whole bunch of items, but they are particularly famous for their pastrami sandwiches. I couldn’t believe that they actually had that many items to choose from on their menu. Usually when a menu has too much on it, the food isn’t that great, but I was very pleased with my meal. I also hadn’t realized it was a Jewish deli until after looking at the menu. (When I go out to eat real late there isn’t much to choose from, but maybe only fast food so when I find a place like Canter’s it makes the foodie in me happy.) The thing I was most surprised at though, was that they had Matzo Ball Soup on the menu. They also brought pickles to the table to munch on before dinner which is very rare. I laughed though at the amount of “hipsters” inside the restaurant, courtesy of the bar right next door called Kibitz Room, where a band was playing. The restaurant has also been there since 1931 so it still had the old look to it, but the atmosphere was great.

As we left, I noticed their bakery was also very busy. It was filled with an assortment of pies, cookies, cakes, and more. Hopefully next time I visit I will get a chance to try out their tasty looking dessert selection and a few more items on their menu. By the way, excuse the bad photography skills. I took this picture with my iPhone and it didn’t have the iPhone 3GS auto focusing technology in it. I will try to bring my camera with me next time I’m on a random adventure in search of a food destination.

This might be an eerie thing to post about, but up until recently after seeing something about it in the newspaper I decided to go ahead and research it myself.

A friend took me with her a few years ago while she was taking pictures for one of her photography classes and someone had mentioned it had been dubbed “Suicide Bridge.” I had seen the bridge plenty of times before during the day and thought the architecture of it was awesomely intact and the city had done a good job of keeping it nearly the same as when it had been built. I probably never would have known anything close to a suicide would have happened there if someone had not of mentioned it.

The bridge was built in 1913 and connects Pasadena with Glendale and Eagle Rock. It is officially known as an architectural landmark and is probably one of the sights you always see going down 210 late at night, because of the classic 1920 designed lampposts. During the day the bridge looks calm and peaceful, but at night some say it gives off more of a dark feeling. If you’re really from the area then you probably already know the scary stories they tell about the bridge being haunted by ghosts of those who committed suicide jumping off of it. Six years after construction had taken place in the 1900s the first suicide was recorded and since then hundreds after. Many of the suicides have been blamed on the Great Depression of the 1930s which left people with such little hope that they chose to end their lives. Whether or not supernatural forces are actually associated with the bridge, no one will ever know. Just like the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, the Colorado bridge has been given more safety nets and extra things have been added onto it for safety precautions.

Colorado Street (known as Boulevard now) Bridge today is used in a lot of films that take place in Los Angeles County (recently Yes Man, 2008). It is also closed every summer for a festival called “A Celebration on the Colorado Street Bridge”. Locals come to celebrate the history of the bridge and its restoration with live music and antique cars.

It is right off of 134 on Zoo Drive across from the Autry National Center and the Griffith Observatory (which deserve their own blog posts, so I will get back to both of those places in the future). I was really happy taking my cousin this time, because all of the construction they have been doing there had finally been completed. Parking is free and tickets are cheap with the adult’s price only at 12 dollars and children at 7. Inside the zoo it is basically a huge botanical garden nestled in the hills of Los Angeles, where the plants come from almost every location in the world. My cousin could care less about all the pretty flowers and decor of the place, so we walked throughout the zoo looking at the vast amount of animals that it has to offer. You’d be surprised at how much time you can actually spend looking at every exhibit. Thankfully, the new Gorilla Reserve exhibit was finished which everyone flocked too. It is located directly in the heart of the zoo and is the home to six interesting gorillas. (There is a very short video below. Excuse the quality, I used the video on my digital camera.) There is also marine life, some marsupials, reptiles, birds, etc. The zoo is not only full of close up views of animals, but people happen to take advantage of the hilly terrain so there are always fellow Los Angeles residents coming to exercise their way up and down the hills while they look at the animals. The zoo has come a long way since my first visit years ago, and nearby residents should definitely stop by again to check out the big changes that have been occuring recently.

Sorry I haven’t updated in so long, I have had a Macbook mishap which has been fixed, thankfully. I don’t know what I would do without it. You should have seen my sad face as I walked away from the Apple Store. Anyway…back to my blog post.

Most people do not know this about me, but I happen to frequent museums a lot. I just love going to them as much as I can and visiting ones I have never been to. A friend of mine happened to have never visited the Norton Simon Museum in Pasadena, CA. It is an art museum located about twenty minutes from where I live on Colorado Boulevard and I promised we would go there as one of our daily activities. I included some pictures of the artwork inside which are from Vincent Van Gogh, Pablo Picasso, and Diego Rivera. (Excuse the crappy pictures, because they were taken from an iPhone and sometimes the lighting is not as great in some areas.) It is free for students and 8 dollars for adults. It isn’t a bad price for a few hours of walking around and looking at everything. It was fairly quiet as we walked in, but there were a lot of students sitting and writing notes, which I figured were college students because of the art school up the street. My friend ended up loving the place and we were both happy with our experience going there.

I will be writing another blog post related to this one about my past couple of days hanging out near Pasadena, so I do have a lot of blog catching up to do.

During work last week, two of my co-worker friends and I were on an assignment. We happened to grab lunch in Downtown Los Angeles on Sunset. I had never been in that area (around Silver Lake) and I could not believe there were so many places in the area that I wanted to try. I will definitely be going back. We stopped at a small place called Good, which is famous for its hundreds of beers in stock and of course the food. You have the option of sitting outside in the shade or inside, but with the heat lately we had to stick to the inside. If you look toward the kitchen area there are tons of every different type of beer you could think of that are lined against the glass wall. I was not in the mood for a very heavy meal during lunch because I get very lazy afterward, but chose the Arrogant Bastard Cobb which was the best Cobb that I’ve ever had. It was topped with an avocado cut into a flower shape. The lettuce was shredded instead of in big pieces, with tomato, bacon, turkey, bleu cheese, and chopped scallions. (It was probably the prettiest salad I’ve ever had too.) Both friends chose sandwiches. One had a pulled pork sandwich with beer battered fries. When he didn’t speak a word throughout the whole meal besides the constant, “Mmmm”, I knew it was good. The other friend had the Aspen sandwich which contained a turkey breast with cranberry sauce, Dijon mustard, and swiss cheese on top of cranberry spiced bread. We found out that it has Mystery Beer Wednesdays for three dollars, so I will be taking more friends there to enjoy it with me. Overall, the meal was very tasty and Good was even better than its name suggests. I do recommend this as a place you will want to stop by if you are in the area. I do hope I didn’t make your mouth water too much. (The picture of Good above is a picture of it participating at the Sunset Street Junction this past weekend.)

Last night after I got home, me and a friend rushed over to an Angels game in Anaheim, which I know isn’t in Los Angeles. They have always been my Dad’s favorite team since he was raised in Orange County and I have learned to like them as well. My Aunt happened to give my Dad some tickets and he knew I had been wanting to go, so I accepted the ticket offer. Baseball has always been something that has connected me and my family, so it always reminds me of my childhood. I haven’t been to a game in so long, and the field looks just as I remember it, but a little more broken in since the last renovation. The game started at 7 pm, and we arrived just in time to see a little girl singing the National Anthem. We had amazing seats that were right along the first base line, behind the visitors dugout and you could practically touch the players. (Specifically Mark Teixeira, my new favorite player who was just traded to the team as one of their best hitters. He’s my favorite since Tim Salmon retired.) The game ended up being very exciting, with the Angels and Seattle Mariners playing a game of “Tag” each inning due to the score being tied back and forth. After all the peanuts and beer had been consumed, the game ended with Seattle winning by a home run in the 12th inning and bringing in three total. The score was 10-7. I had an amazing night and the weather in California turned out being warmer than I thought, but still in the comfortable seventies. I look forward to attending another game soon.

Other than baseball games and other things I have been doing, my life has been pretty busy lately, especially with the fall semester right around the corner. I have never really had a plan as to what I might be doing during the semester, but this time I plan to approach it differently. Basically by organizing my time better than I have been and designating specific times to actually do my work. Anyway, so I don’t stray too far from my main topic, thanks for reading and I plan to post again soon.

First things first, I walked into my backyard yesterday and stumbled upon this butterfly sitting on my orange tree and just had to take a picture and share.

I wanted to blog about a lot of different things, but it seems like I have too many things on my mind, so I will just leave you with a little bit since it is 8.8.08.

Those of you that know me personally, know that I go to the movies very frequently. So, I did finally go see the Dark Knight on IMAX, which was absolutely amazing. I thought the movie was going to end multiple times, but it kept giving me more. Sadly this was Heath Ledger’s last movie, but he did leave all of us with an amazing performance as the Joker.

A friend and I went to one of my favorite places in Los Angeles, the original Phillipe’s (pronounced Felipe’s). It is has been around since 1908 located across from Union Station and Olvera Street (I’ll talk about these in a later blog) and claims the creation of the “French Dipped Sandwich.” The restaurant still has its employees dressed in the style of clothing like when it first opened and serves dipped sandwiches, different types of salad, breakfast in the morning, and pies. The sandwiches range from about 8-9 dollars and the drinks are only around 80 cents, coffee is 9 cents. I recommend trying the beef dip, a side of potato salad, two lemonades (they are half the size of a regular glass), and a slice of one of their pies. They do put hot mustard on the tables, but I am not particularly fond of that type of mustard. The restaurant is filled with wooden tables, sawdust all over the floor, and is always a loud and fun environment. It is also nice to look at old memorabilia of Los Angeles that hangs on the walls. The place gets pretty packed though so it has two parking lots designated for customers, the only downside for card carriers is that you have to actually have cash on you.

This concludes my post, because I have a lot of things to catch up on. I hope I entertained you some.

Well, I thought I might add some pictures to this new post, but it turns out I was a little too lazy to carry around my camera and it wasn’t allowed in some places.

On Friday, the day was filled with a lot of different things that were going on around Los Angeles. We ended up going to the Museum of Tolerance, because my friend had never been there before and I decided to take him so that he could experience it first off. For those of you that don’t know what that is, it is a history museum that teaches people about racism and has an exhibit that focuses on the holocaust. (Cameras are not allowed inside the museum and for security purposes they check your car and you have to pass through metal detectors prior to entry.)

We also went to Malibu to go surfing the rest of the day. The ocean was gorgeous and so was the weather. I managed to get more of a tan, so now I feel all golden. We ended up taking a detour on the way back so that we could drive through Beverly Hills and I stumbled upon a Pinkberry, which I have never been to. I took my first spoonful of it and I couldn’t believe what tasty goodness could come from a frozen yogurt. I will definitely be going there again, but taking more friends with me next time.

Thanks to those of you who happened to read my last post, left me comments, and those of you that called me to say they liked the new blog. I appreciate the support.
